History
Nova Southeastern University was established in 1964, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1964, Nova Southeastern University, called Nova University of Advanced Technology at that time, was chartered as a graduate institution in social and physical sciences. Later on, Nova added programs in business, computer science, education, law, and oceanography. Nova introduced its first off-campus course of study in education. Soon after, the university became nationally recognized or its distance education programs. Today, field-based programs are located all over Florida, in 23 states and in selected international sites. Between 1987 to 1997, Southeastern University added colleges of pharmacy, allied health, medical sciences, dental medicine and optometry. Nova University merged with Southeastern University of Health Sciences to form Nova Southeastern University, in 1994. Now a days, NSU is a not-for-profit, independent university that is classified as a research university. Nova Southeastern University is also one of the only 37 universities nationwide to be awarded Carnegie's Community Engagement Classification.
